We find ourselves continually trapped in the beliefs of existence. The beliefs that own us, influence us and contrive to capture us without even a conscious thought or question. They come about through the simple act of being alive and born into a situation. Whatever that situation. Hence ‘beliefs of existence’.

Notoriously, politics and religion are considered two of the toughest ropes that bind us. Both holding some of us together and at the same time, tearing others of us apart, are two of the most obvious examples. But beliefs of existence range from how I view women, if I’m a man, through to the moral ability to commit a criminal act and they don’t stop there either. Examine everything you think and do. Analise why you do it and why you think it. You will see, more often than not, a belief of existence is deep in the core of the thought or action, no matter how trivial, no matter how expansive.

We can never be completely free from the beliefs of existence but we can consciously arrive at a position where we choose the ones we accept and the ones we reject. We can and should continually modify, change, and adapt beliefs of existence. This makes you who you are. This makes us who we are. And the people that don’t do this? And there are many. Well, it makes them who they are and the world what it is.

Perhaps the three most dangerous beliefs of existence right now are ‘not my problem’, with ‘don’t blame me’ sitting on one side and ‘nothing I can do’ sat on the other. Right across the table from all three are poverty, inequality and abuse. ‘Not my problem’ and friends put us right where we are today.

We have a duty to at least leave a world fit for purpose. We have a duty to leave to the future some kind of reasonable life. We cannot let our beliefs of existence make us fail.

In an age when it has never been easier to communicate with each other, we are not finding common bonds and common ground. Only the very reasons to separate and withdraw into our tiny enclaves. Take a look around at what we’ve done to the planet and very soon you see that this separation is not possible. Both economically, technologically and sociologically. If we continue as we are, we fail on our duty to the future and to ourselves more and more.

And whose future is it? The cliché truth is that it’s our children’s future, their children’s future and so on. In reality, it’s all our futures. Dramatic social and environmental changes are happening right now. The future is being mapped out now by huge influences that nobody should like.

We can change that. We really can.
